1948 Presidential Election

Republican Thomas Dewey ran against democrat Harry Truman in the 1948 presidential election.  Dewey ran in 1944 as well but lost to Franklin Delano Roosevelt.  Gallup polls predicted that Dewey would defeat Truman, and journalists wrote articles saying that Truman won before they knew the results.  The landslide actually went the other way, and Truman defeated Dewey.  Democrats also were in control of Congress that year, but Republicans had been in control in 1946.

  1. Interesting – I guess the accuracy of the poles is perhaps not that accurate! Today, and even in 1948!
